ah formal silverware by matthew if you are looking to buy or sell ah formal pattern silverware please get in contact 06/09/2013 up for trade hi there everyone i have my formal ah sugar tongs up for trade. i would like to exchange for a piece of ah formal cutlery not currently in my collection. if you have a piece of cutlery of similar value please email me and we can work-out an exchange that benefits your collection and mine. below is the price as sold in germany at hermann historica auction house last month 4,400.00 euros. many thanks matthew [email protected] __________________________ as collectors we have come to call this service pattern ah formal silverware a post war description. the formal ah pattern or the period name fuhrer design is a rolled silver impression. however, engraved teapots /silver trays and gravy boats can be found with the same or similar design (eagle& monogram) but engraved. these are included in the settings found at hitlers 5&6 haunts. (see stars & stripes photos). the price of the (cutlery) have gone from $100 in the early 1980s and with common use of the internet up to $450 per piece by 2000. the market however did not define between less common items like serving cutlery and standard dinner forks and knifes of the pattern in 2000. they all cost the same. this has changed three fold with standard knife, forks, spoons, teaspoons selling for $1200 or more. the less known specialized forms like oyster forks, lemonade spoons, tomato knifes and what we call pickle forks today $1600-$2200 currently. serving pieces like gravy spoons, cake spades and meat forks etc, starting at $2000-$3500. the most sort-after that can be found are the grape scissors, cigar cutters, sugar tongs and smoking boxes. i do not cover the cigar boxes, cigarette boxes and match boxes as i do not have first hand research information on them. heinrich hoffmann seems not to have photographed them. however they are listed in the period 1938 eagles nest consignment document. the most common item seems to be the coffee spoon noted in the 1938 consignment note below. the price of glory by henriette von schirach (p172)1960 the silver cutlery was engraved with a and an h, separated by an eagle. even the brushes and nail-files in the wash-room bore the same inscription. hitler became angry whenever he was told that a few more of the small engraved coffee spoons were missing guests were always taking them as souvenirs. i wonder what he would have said, could he have seen the issue of stars and stripes with a picture showing a beaming american officers wife with his engraved cutlery on her table. below are the photos henriette refers to in her book price of glory regarding stars and stripes showing the ah formal pattern . (the real period name for this pattern is fuhrer design) this is the description given by the 1938 eagles nest invoice as displayed. henriette von schirach was heinrich hoffmanns daughter but more on him later. i contacted david irving who interview her in the course of researching one of his books, david told me he was given a ah spoon by henriette. unfortunately he has lost it recently. so i sent him photos of the ah formal pattern as shown and david was able confirm it was the same pattern. the july 1938 consignment sheet was a purchase for 750 piece fuhrer design cutlery and the authority on the account prof fick. one of hitlers architects. the company that sold them was f.h wandinger of munich. (franz and hermann wandinger) this is a complete service for 36 guests. it does not give us the manufacturer however the styles and function match hoffmanns photos and collectors understanding of what was made and are represented on the market and private collections. the wandingers twins were shipping these items at the direction of the architectural company of professor fick, directed by architect michaelis. the wandingers brothers were hitlers jewellers and made many of the smoking boxes. an example can be found on thomas wittmanns website http://www.wwiidaggers.com/silver.htm the cost of the consignment was 11,250rm for the 750 lot. this document shows how rare, rare is for this pattern and types at this location there are cigarette boxes/ cigar boxes and match box holders so they were in use and documented here as you may know the non-smoking fuhrer has caused much debate on these items. (interestingly no napkin rings present). also it has been suggested that this design was a gift from the makers for hitlers 50 th birthday however it was paid for and cost in this case. (perhaps by the party but not the makers here ) hoffman hitler's official photographer the hoffmann collection housed in munich germany is the best resource for the fuhrer design silverware at present. ( the hoffmann photos only show cutlery- in their different forms and no serving items). below are the original images. when enlarge from the negatives the half moon/ crown and 800 silver standard plus eagle are clearly seen in the middle of the knife as found today. hoffmann tells us that while waiting to be a witness at the nuremberg trial he was given the task of putting all his photo files in order (some went to washington & some must have remained in germany). his book hitler was my friend . in regards to configuration of the formal pattern, there are two major design differences to look out for. the greek boarder surround that is all the way around the cutlery piece and the greek boarder that only runs to the middle of the cutlery neck. (these all though in some forms are not as big as serving items are in reality serving items in their own right). here is a comparison the half pattern i believe is a lemonade stirring spoon one-of-eight according to the 1938 consignment document.
